The Benefits of Vegan Skincare

The Benefits of Vegan Skincare

Japanese skincare is known worldwide for its quality and high standard. With a rise in the popularity of veganism in Japan, veganism isn’t just a trend these days and extends to more than just a plant-based diet. The vegan movement has since expanded to include the fashion and beauty scene, and vegan beauty products and clean beauty are on the rise in Japan as well.

But what exactly is vegan-friendly skincare, and is it better for you? Today, we’ll be sharing all about vegan skincare, explaining how vegan-friendly skincare can change (or even improve) your skin, as well as our Japanese point of view.

What is vegan skincare?

Although it might seem silly to think that products other than food can be non-vegan, this is not always the case. You might be surprised at just how common animal products are. We all use a huge range of products with varying textures: from shampoos and toothpaste to creams and clays. We usually don’t think about what really goes into our products, and very rarely do we zoom in on the product label to analyze if each ingredient comes from an animal source. It’s not always easy avoiding such items – especially if you’re not aware of them.

Vegan skincare, by definition, is skincare products that are created without using any ingredient derived from animals, including animal by-products. This is different from cruelty-free, as a product can be created without being tested on animals, but still contain ingredients like milk or honey. Vegan skincare products are purely plant-based. Each ingredient is sourced from plants, meaning they are chemical-free and do not contain any artificial additives.

Why is vegan skincare better?

Once perceived as something for overly health-conscious people, the vegan lifestyle is now one of the most popular lifestyle trends of the 21st century. Aside from the multiple health benefits that a vegan diet can do for your health, switching over to vegan skincare provides an abundance of benefits for your skin’s appearance and overall health as well.

  1. Good news for animals
It almost goes without saying that vegan skincare products are better for animals. You get to enjoy a clear conscience when using your favourite skincare products, knowing that you are contributing towards a safer world for animals.

  2. Better ingredients
By not having any chemicals or artificial additives, natural ingredients found in vegan skincare (such as chamomile, aloe vera, and tea) tree have been tested and tried and have been proven to have purification benefits. They are also rich in vitamins which assist in cell regeneration, thus keeping your skin looking young and vibrant. Vegan skincare is also great for those with sensitive skin and helps with skin problems such as eczema, allergies, and skin inflammation, among many others.

  3. Kinder to your skin
Our skin absorbs 60% of what we apply to it. Therefore, every product you use on it is absorbed in your body as well. Vegan products aren’t just kinder to animals, they’re often kinder to hair and skin as well. Vegan skincare products generally contain fewer ingredients that are likely to irritate or aggravate any skin conditions.

  4. Always smells good
When products are made using organic or natural materials, they’re usually naturally scented. Since vegan skincare products contain natural ingredients, they’re no exception to the naturally-scented rule. The difference between natural scents and artificial fragrances is so evident when it comes to authenticity, quality, and even skin sensitivity. Natural, vegan products will maintain pleasant scents for longer periods than their chemically-enhanced counterparts.

  5. Good for the environment
While animal cruelty is a major concern when it comes to animal-based beauty products, the harmful effects of such products can extend beyond animals to include the environment as well. The animal-based beauty industry can cause air pollution, water pollution, and deforestation. However, with vegan skincare products, sustainability is not an issue. It’s an overall cleaner and greener system that’s better for this world we call home.
